Cuil etc

In a followup to yesterday's report about new search engine Cuil, Time magazine mentioned other, cleverer search engines. Ask.com was familiar*, but SearchMe.com was a new one. The Time article says it shows visual images of the search results, in a flippable format "which you can flip like the album covers on iTunes". (Now where have I heard iTunes mentioned before....)

Anyway, I don't know how handy SearchMe will be, but it does have possible uses in finding web pages you have been to before but can't remember the URL to. Just browse through the photos until you find one that looks familiar!

Thanks for that discovery, Bridget! I find that personally I stick to what works, until they change it. One reason I think Google is so successful (besides being a good product) is that they don't really mess with their bread and butter too much. The search page is the same as it was, with a few small additions that don't hinder their users. Some search sites have added so many distracting elements that I simply don't use them anymore. I won't even mention the animated ads for lower mortgage rates!
I miss Jeeves, too.

SearchMe was fun to play with, but I can't see using it on a regular basis. I'm a diehard Googler. I like the layout and the number of results per page. For image searches nothing else works as well. And of course you can't beat 1)their "holiday" logos and 2)the Urban Fairies in their Ann Arbor offices!
